Grumpy Goat Closure: The Grumpy Goat, a popular café and cheese shop, is set to close after its owner issued a week’s statement to vacant the premises. Here’s what we know so far about The Grumpy Goat.
Grumpy Goat Closure
Businesses in reading shared their grief over the loss of Grumpy Goat which recently announced endangering closure. A popular café and cheese shop, The Grumpy Goat is located on Union Street, geared up to close.
Grumpy Goat is set to close its door on Saturday, 28 October 2023.
It’s been a regular store on the main street for 10 years, but in an Instagram message on Wednesday, October 25, the team at the Grumpy Goat announced, “All good things must come to an end, but sometimes sooner than we would like.”
Why is The Grumpy Goat Reading Closed?
After hearing about the closure, The Fox and Hounds Beer House in Caversham expressed their deep sadness. They posted an Instagram message from Connie Cain, who owns Milk Reading, a rum and cocktail bar in the same town.
Taking to Instagram Ms. Chain wrote, “It’s Wednesday so that would normally mean a post about rum or something but I can’t get over how livid the Goat news has made me.
Anne-Marie and Charlie have worked for a decade to create a beautiful local community in a town not only overrun by national chains but American fast food chains as well. Whenever we talk to people about Reading, one thing that is always mentioned is the lack of independence in this town.
Phone shops and vape shops have taken over an iconic alley that was once known for local butchers, fish mongers, and grocers, and The Grumpy Goat was a beacon of what the area could become if the council did anything about it.
Other towns have proven that it’s possible to have multiple independent businesses that all work together to create an interesting environment for locals so what has happened to ours?
The Grumpy Goat has been hosting tastings, workshops, and seminars to give Reading something interesting and unique. They’re a huge part of the indie scene as well as being an important part of the LGBTQA+ community with their Glitter events.
This is a perfect example of landlord greed that should be stamped out. They have been given a week to move everything out of the shop before they lose access. These are PEOPLE. This is their livelihood. They have a team of employees too that are now out of jobs. This is devastating to lose such an icon of independence, but also our friends that we work closely with and have collaborated on multiple events.
The Grumpy Goat’s last day is Saturday, so please go and support them in their last week.
I’m sure we haven’t seen the end of the Goats but for now, I’m absolutely fuming.”
