Who Is Misty Copeland?
Misty Copeland is often considered the first African-American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the history of ballet dancing. She is a successful author and dancing teacher.
She was born on 10 September 1982 to Sylvia DelaCerna and Doug Copeland, in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. Her father is of German and African-American descent, while her mother is of Italian.
Ms. Misty auditioned for various dance programs in 1999 and later she performed with ABT as part of its 1999 and 2000 Summer Intensive programs. In September 2000, she joined the ABT Studio Company later she became a member of its Corps de ballet in 2001.
She made her most notable performance in George Balanchine’s Tarantella in 2005 the same year she also danced the Lead Polovtsian Girl in “Polovtsian Dances” by Prince Igor.
She was appointed a soloist at ABT in August 2007 and became one of the youngest ABT dancers promoted to soloist.
Copeland made her film debut in 2018 playing her role as a ballerina princess in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” movie.
She also wrote Ballerina Body: Dancing and Eating Your Way to a Leaner, Stronger, and More Graceful You (2017) and Black Ballerinas: My Journey to Our Legacy (2021), the children’s books Firebird (2014) and Bunheads (2020).

Misty Copeland, 41, got engaged to Olu Evans, a corporate attorney and the cousin of actor and Broadway star Taye Diggs, the couple announced their wedding in 2016 and tied the know on 31 July 2016 in California.
She stated at her wedding, “I just want it to be simple and classy and not feel like I’m in a tutu. I feel like I get to become a fairy princess on stage and wear incredible costumes and gowns to galas.”
The pair became the parents of a boy named Jackson, who was born in 2022. Although, Misty barely shares the news of her personal life she even doesn’t share the news of her pregnancy.
She mentioned, “Definitely with my son, I wouldn’t have him probably be on camera for anything. But when it comes to my career and what I’m doing, I’m really open.”
