Acting Temple University president JoAnne Epps, who has been a faculty of Temple University since 1985, passed away after falling ill during an event on Tuesday afternoon when was taking part in a memorial service for Charles L. Blockson.
The 72-year-old beloved acting president was attending the Charles L. Blockson Memorial Service at the Temple Performing Arts Center. The event was being live-streamed on the university’s official website.
She lost consciousness and suddenly collapsed on the stage. She was immediately rushed to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia for further treatment, where she was pronounced dead at 3: 15 p.m.
Her sudden death news was confirmed by the University in a statement, “It is with deep heartbreak that we write to inform you that Temple University Acting President JoAnne A. Epps suddenly passed away this afternoon.”
Mitchell Morgan, Temple board chairman said, “There are no words that can describe the gravity and sadness of this loss.”
He further added, “President Epps was a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple. She spent nearly 40 years of her life serving this university, and it goes without saying her loss will reverberate through the community for years to come.”

JoAnne Epps, 72, died on 19 September Tuesday around 3: 15 p.m. She was a Cheltenham, Pennsylvania native, and had a number of positions at Temple Univesity.
Williams-Witherspoon, who was sitting with Epps during the event, recalled, “I said JoAnne, are you OK? She didn’t respond. Her eyes were open. I touched her hand and said, ‘In the name of Jesus.”
Morgan expressed condolence, “I am devastated by this loss, She was our light at the end of the tunnel. Temple University will survive it. I’m not sure I will emotionally survive it.”
