Cameron Brooksbank was the victim of a horrifying attack, called an axe attack that happened on 17 October 2017. The BBC crime documentary The Detectives resumes on Tuesday night as it follows Greater Manchester Police’s dedicated organized crime unit in Rochdale.
During the whole series, DS Martin Soutter, who leads the officers’ team, tries to bring down the Adam gang, based on the Newbold Estate in the town. The first episode of the series shows officers grappling with a horrific axe attack.
Cameron Brooksbank was just 18 years old and used to be a tree surgeon working nearby until the incident happened in 2017. He was stabbed. An axe first struck him on his armpit and then on the wrist but tried to protect his head from another blow.
This terrible incident ruined his life and Cameron was admitted to the hospital for treatment to recover his damaged hand.
What Happened to Cameron Brooksbank Rochdale
His hand was damaged and was partially reattached, It required a further five surgeries, and his hand was recovered to use only 6o% in two years since the incident happened.
Cameron stated in a police interview that the events physically and mentally scarred him.
Speaking in an episode of the series, Mr. Cameron recalls the incident of 2017, “Four or five cars turned up with people in. I pushed myself to the front of the crowd telling everyone to calm down.”
He continued, “The first hit was on my left-hand side just under my armpit. It went that far in he had to yank it back out.
“I felt something warm and wet. As I turned around I saw the axe was about here [gesturing to the side of his head] and I put my arm up.
“The axe went through the top of my wrist and then it shattered my bone. I remember absolutely every single second of that day.”
In episode three of The Detectives, he revealed more details, “I woke up from the operation and thought everything like my career had gone down the drain.”
“I had five operations and got depressed, and tried to do myself in a few times. I took an overdose and was rushed into hospital. I am not the same person as I was two years ago and I don’t think I ever will be.”
Cameron’s attacker was detected as Mohammed Awais Sajid, alias ‘Skinny’, of Kings Road, Rochdale. He was sentenced to 18 years after being found guilty of section 18 wounding.

“This has been the most terrible time for our family, but we are just one, of many, that are being supported by GMP, who are constantly being destroyed by these cruel, merciless drug gangs.
Everyone can see first-hand how these members proactively target children into drug misuse and debt to become modern-day slaves.
Also, the bravery of the officers who put their lives on the line must never be taken for granted; they have been so caring and comforting.”
